TURN UP THE VOLUME

The music industry may be floundering, but here on the Main Line and in neighboring towns, creativity is flowing. Artists of all ages are recording in basements and studios throughout the region, and American Idol has brainwashed half of America into thinking they’ve got what it takes to go platinum. Myspacemusic.com is in; the “majors” are out. Once-unknown artists can now do in six months what used to take a year: Build a fan base, get a record deal and perform at a major venue. All it takes is talent, a laptop and guts. Meanwhile, coffeehouses, bars and dedicated music venues are doing their part to snare audiences. Here’s a look at the best of what’s out there.
