Home for the Holidays

West Chester’s Kati Mac Floral Designs has a knack for transforming homes into self-contained holiday wonderlands. It offers a range of services, from tabletop arrangements to full-fledged interior/exterior decorating projects. Owner Kate McNamara begins every job with an in-home consultation to get a perspective on personal tastes and color schemes. Here are some tips she offers her clients:

Make a great first impression. The entry foyer is perfect for making a statement. If there’s a table in the space, top it off with a gorgeous floral arrangement. “Place a beautiful wreath on the door, hang garlands and fresh greens from the banister, and if the space is large enough, include a small Christmas tree elegantly decorated,” says McNamara.

Fresh isn’t always best. Atop fireplace mantles, it’s best to go with a silk or dried flower arrangement. Fresh flowers won’t be able to withstand the heat from the fireplace.

Decorate everywhere. Each room in the house could use a holiday touch, including the kitchen. Often overlooked is the recess between the top of cabinets and the ceiling—a great spot for fresh greens and decorations. “And kitchen islands
and tables are perfect places for a beautiful floral arrangement,” McNamara says.

Break out of your decorating rut. There are colors beyond green and red. “We like to experiment with earth tones, metallics and others,” she says.

Custom is key. “All of our decorations we make custom,” says McNamara. “We spray dried tropical material in golds and silvers to give arrangements and wreaths a different look.”
