The Who’s Roger Daltrey.
Iconic English rockers the Who are headed back to Philadelphia for a belated second stop on their “Hits 50” tour. The band was last here in May, when they proved they still have that swagger.
This second show was originally scheduled for a November slot, but the band had to postpone when lead singer Roger Daltrey was hospitalized for viral meningitis. He’s since recovered, and the tour has resumed. Rescheduled dates include the March 14 stop at the Wells Fargo Center.
Last year’s show had moments when Daltrey’s voice couldn’t quite handle the upper registers. But he still performed with vim and vigor, and vocally capable members of the band helped to carry those few instances. Joining Daltrey is co-founder Pete Townshend and drummer Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr. Townshend’s brother, Simon, adds guitar, and the incomparable Pino Palladino has taken over for the deceased John Entwistle on bass.
With a catalog that stretches for miles and miles, there’s no shortage of great music for the Who to choose from. Over the course of 20 or so songs, they flesh out an excellent representation of their 50-plus years as one of the best rock bands on the planet.
Australian bass sensation Tal Wilkenfeld opens the show.
