Private Schools Guide 2012: Techie Touches

No chalk, no board, no problem. Tech innovations are taking the place of traditional learning tools, with impressive results.

The Haverford School• Last fall, every sophomore at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart received an iPad, while students and parents alike participated in a mandatory three-hour introductory “boot camp” to familiarize themselves with the device. Lower and middle school students also have limited access to iPads.

• Aspiring musicians at Episcopal Academy have access to the music department’s Mac lab for classes in composition and independent projects. Technology courses are also offered in robotics, advanced computer programming and video production.

• Upper-school students in the math department’s software programming class at the Haverford School created the first Apple-approved, student-designed app. It enables students to easily access things like their daily schedule, lunch menu and faculty email contacts. The Calvary, Haverford’s robotics team, brought home several awards from the VEX Robotics World Championship this past spring in Anaheim, Calif. Next year, robotics will be further incorporated into the science curriculum with a LEGO program in the lower school.
