I live in Rockville, Md., about 10 blocks from a historical marker that features the 1855 newspaper notice of runaway slave Ann Maria Weems. On a recent stay at the Desmond Hotel in Malvern, as I was scanning the current issue of Main Line Today, I was astounded to see that familiar photo of her in your article about Ellwood Harvey [“Ellwood Takes a Drive,” Retrospect, November 2007]. I’m taking the article to our local historical society in the event they’re not aware of Dr. Harvey’s role in her escape.
