With a central theme, “Honoring the Past; Embracing our Future”, several representatives from Bryn Mawr met in 2011 to plan an event recognizing and honoring a small group of local institutions that attained or exceeded 100 years.
On August 4, 2011, inspired by its rich historical past, the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners issued a formal resolution honoring nineteen “remarkable institutions.” This momentous event launched the first “Bryn Mawr 100” celebration on Saturday, September 10, 2011.
The Bryn Mawr 100 Committee that year, was comprised of businesses, institutions, organizations and associations, either representing or tied closely to the 19 founding institutions. The centerpiece event celebrated these institutions with awards, at the Gazebo, on Bryn Mawr Avenue. Recognition and speeches were accentuated by vendors representing healthcare, education, family and neighborhood resources, with a few local food vendors. Fire truck rides and history tours were included, which remain popular, four years later, despite the vastly expanded magnitude and scope that is now identified with Bryn Mawr Day
In 2012, with no inductees, Bryn Mawr Day instead focused on the re-opening of Luddington Library, with added attractions, such as the circus and several musical performances. “Bryn Mawr 100” was re-named “Bryn Mawr Day” the following year.
In 2013 the original celebration was replaced, with a high energy, re-branding of the original Bryn Mawr 100. Its new location, occupying the entire parking lot across from Luddington Library, spiraled into a festivity-packed day that also focused on growing trends, such as the restaurant renaissance evident along Lancaster Avenue and throughout the town. “A Taste of Bryn Mawr” gave crowds throughout the day a sampling of food venues, literally in their own backyard. Radio Disney brought hundreds of people to participate in the interactive plays and games, synonymous with Disney.
The “Bryn Mawr Stage” was created to showcase popular musical groups, that performed throughout the day, focusing on the diverse local talent that is a signature of Bryn Mawr.
Among the iconic people, places and things that are showcased throughout the day, are prominent and prestigious Main Line cultural, business and healthcare practices – business destinations that are highly regarded for cuisine, fashion, style, design and industry excellence. Professional services, consistently named among the region’s “best” are highlighted along with the local flavor identified with Bryn Mawr.
Throughout the year, these diverse businesses, practices, institutions and groups remain in the spotlight through the unwavering energy and support of the Bryn Mawr Business Association, a central thread within Bryn Mawr that serves as a conduit for generating attention and good-will, while serving as the energizing force for exhibits, events, special programs, amenities, and services. The Bryn Mawr Business Association, like the “Bryn Mawr 100”, unites the classic and the contemporary, the traditional and current, on Bryn Mawr Day and during the year for Bryn Mawr and all of its constituencies.
