Malvern

A decade in the making, Eastside Flats along King Street is finally open to residents and businesses. A one-bedroom rents for $1,550-$1,650. Built alongside the train tracks, the place is popular with those who commute to the city. “I know a young couple, just getting their feet wet in the suburbs, who are living there,” says realtor Dana Zdancewicz. “They’re going to rent for a year or two, and then buy.” The streets surrounding downtown Malvern have limited inventory, but buyers are going after fixer-uppers near King Street.

Kennett Square

Just a short drive from Longwood Gardens, this cozy Chester County hamlet has made quite a name for itself during the past five years. Affordable townhouses and single-family homes attract a younger crowd, contributing to excitement downtown in the form of boutiques, acclaimed restaurants like Talula’s Table (pictured), a live-music venue and more. This spring, award-winning regional suds purveyor Victory Brewing Company is opening a location on the ground level of Magnolia Place, a 79-unit apartment-and-townhouse community.
