“I want to run a food truck.”
It’s not what parents expect to hear from a son who graduated from Episcopal Academy and the University of Pennsylvania. But in 2009, 26-year-old Drew Crockett resigned from his Wall Street job, took out a $50,000 loan, and invested $20,000 of his own money in a truck that would sell coffee.
“My mom took me out to breakfast and asked some very careful questions,” Crockett says. “She worried that I was having a quarter-life crisis.”
Her concern was understandable. Back then, food-truck chic hadn’t taken hold. Coffee, however, was everywhere—and apparently the public needed more of it.
Crockett’s “craft coffee” became the morning must-have on Penn’s campus, where he parked his fire-engine-red vehicle emblazoned with the HubBub logo. In January 2013, Crockett opened HubBub’s first brick-and-mortar location at 17th and Arch streets. Ten months later, there was a second shop on Penn’s campus. “The only competition is Starbucks and Wawa,” says Crockett, with little concern.
Indeed, HubBub is on a roll. Another shop debuted in Radnor in 2014, and Crockett has more expansion plans for this year.
