New Jersey native Kevin Smith, the director who brought us Clerks, Chasing Amy and Mallrats, was in Delaware County on Wednesday with his daughter scouting out the Granite Run Mall in Media as a possible location for his film, Mallbrats.
After touring the mall, Smith posted a photo on his Facebook page with a caption that read, “come October, this might be the Mall, y’all.”
In 2013, Granite Run Mall was sold to BET Investments, a real estate development firm owned by Bruce Toll and Michael Markman. Markman met with Smith’s team, who toured the mall on Wednesday. “It’s slated to be demolished in the fall, but we’re willing to hold off a few months if we can come to terms with his group. The interior of the mall is in good condition, and I’m told would be perfect for his movie,” says Markman.
Granite Run Mall opened in 1974. But, in recent years, it has seen a debilitating increase in vacancies. BET Investments intends to convert the mall into a mixed-use development with residential, retail and entertainment.
