Best Finishing Holes: The Ridge at Back Brook, Ringoes, N.J.

537 yards, par 5

This No. 18 is as dramatic a finishing hole as there is in golf—so much so, you’ll swear you’re in Vermont, New Hampshire or some other area famous for rock outcroppings. It tantalizes with architect Tom Fazio’s masterful risk-reward golf course design.
“From tee to green, there is an elevation drop of 60 feet, and the hole is guarded on the right side by the signature ‘ridge’ that runs throughout the property and the entire length of this hole,” says Clint Deibert, the Ridge’s head pro. “For most players, the par 5 will be a three-shot hole that will require a precise layup to a landing area protected by environmentally sensitive areas and then an approach shot that must carry Back Brook Creek to an elevated, two-tiered putting surface. The green complex is guarded by two deep bunkers and an exposed red-rock outcropping wall behind the green.”
Perched on “the ridge” behind the 18th green is the rustic Adirondack-style clubhouse. It serves as the perfect backdrop for the challenges that await.
