The 18th of Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course has been ranked one of the top 500 golf holes in the world and is certainly in most people’s top three finishing holes in the region. Philadelphia native A.W. Tillinghast worked the same course design magic here as he did at many other famous tracks, including the Black Course at Bethpage State Park and Winged Foot (both former U.S. Open host sites). Head golf professional Jim Smith, Jr. summarizes this finishing hole well: “Shot values, setting and beauty.”
“A great tee shot can leave as little as 100 yards in—if you catch the downhill slope—while a poor shot could leave you 250,” adds Smith. “The second shot is downhill to a green nestled between two bunkers and a creek, with our classic clubhouse serving as a backdrop.”
