One of the dangers of a “piece of cake” finishing hole is how quickly it can turn into humble pie. That’s the beauty of Llanerch’s No. 18.
“A great 18th hole has to provide a unique challenge and have a great setting. Llanerch’s 18th hole definitely has both,” says head pro Chris Wilkinson. “While it isn’t a typical, long finishing hole, it is deceptively difficult and provides a wide range of options on how to play it. Long hitters will go for the green, and safe players will hit an iron and layup. Because it is less than 300 yards, it yields many birdies but also brings the big number into play. The most unique part of our 18th hole, however, is how close the clubhouse sits to the green. When the weather is good, onlookers will be only 30 feet away from the green. During big events, the numbers on the patio and terrace can grow to over 100 people. It certainly can provide for great theater and make that last three-foot putt seem a little bit longer.”
