Applebrook’s No. 18 is no doubt one of the best finishing holes in the region. It has the beauty (a stunning clubhouse perched above the green) and the challenge (you need to bomb a drive, then teardrop a second shot to a sloping, elevated green).
“At 454 yards from the championship tee, with an uphill approach to a narrow green, guarded by a large bunker in front and a steep hill behind, it is critical that the player not only put the ball in the fairway, but also choose the right angle of approach,” says head golf pro Dave McNabb. “The second shot plays uphill, and an extra club is needed to ensure reaching the putting surface, as anything short runs the risk of ending up on the steep slope in heavy rough or, even worse, in the greenside bunker, leaving the most difficult of bunker shots. The proper miss is slightly long, as the ball will catch the slope behind the green and roll down onto the putting surface. A shot missed over the green leaves a comeback chip/lob shot that’s difficult to
stop on the putting surface. Then the fun begins—on a severely sloping green that usually rolls near 12 on the Stimpmeter.”
