Scribner’s Catskill Lodge
13 Scribner Hollow Road, Hunter, N.Y., (518) 628-5130
Cost: Starting at $140.
Drive time: 4 hours.
The scoop: While this classic mountain retreat has been welcoming guests for more than a half century, a recent major renovation has given it a new face and contemporary attitude, without sacrificing its original laid-back coziness.
Amenities: Some rooms have fireplaces, and many have floor-to-ceiling glass windows that afford sweeping mountain views. The lodge is pet friendly with advance notice. An on-site restaurant features Hudson Valley-sourced specialties. In the evening, you can chase the winter chill with its cast-iron stoves.
Don’t miss: On Jan. 13, craftspeople from all over the Hudson Valley will bring their work to the lodge for the Phoenicia Flea. And be sure to visit the nearby Olana State Historic Site, the elaborately decorated home of Frederic Erwin Church, among the best of the 19th-century Hudson River School of American landscape painters.
