The scoop: Middleburg is an 18th-century village in the heart of Northern Virginia’s wine and hunt country. The Goodstone Inn, set on a 265-acre estate with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offers 18 rooms and suites in six country-chic guesthouses. Children ages 14 and up are welcome.

Amenities: Three miles of trails are maintained for hiking and biking. Spa services and pet-friendly accommodations are available. A country breakfast and afternoon refreshments are included, and the on-site farm-to-table restaurant boasts a 1,500-bottle wine cellar. Many rooms have jetted tubs, and some provide steam showers. A few of the guesthouses’ sitting rooms feature fireplaces.

Don’t miss: Middleburg starts celebrating Christmas on the first Saturday of December. Over 10,000 visitors participate in the festivities, which include the Middleburg Hunt Review, a mile-long parade featuring dozens of hunting hounds and around 100 horses with riders. Also enjoy caroling, horse-drawn hayrides, a wine crawl, and a second parade with everything from llamas to antique cars to Scots highlanders.
