Who would’ve thought that, after all these years, America would still be charming us with those sweet harmonies? More than four decades after releasing its first album, the band is still selling out shows. The next stop brings the group to Collingswood, N.J.’s acoustically exquisite Scottish Rite Auditorium on Dec. 11.
Since 1971, America has created catchy soft rock/pop tunes tinged with longing and boyish enthusiasm. Once a threesome, America now consists of two of the founders, Gerry Beckly and Dewey Bunnell. Dan Peek, who left the band some years ago, has since passed. Beckly and Bunnell are both multi-instrumentalists, fleshing out the band’s sound, alongside touring musicians Ryland Steen on drums and percussion, Richard Campbell on bass and vocals, and Bill Worrell on guitars and banjo.
The songs will transport the audience back to the ’70s. Except to hear major hits like “Horse With No Name,” “Tin Man,” “Sister Golden Hair” and the ’80s hit “You Can Do Magic.” Woven into the set are some of the band’s edgier tunes, like “Sandman” and the yearning “I Need You.”
With their Crosby, Stills & Nash-type harmonies, America is still vocally impressive. Special guest—and 2015 Power Woman—Christine Havrilla will open the show. A few tickets still remain.
For those who can’t make it this time, America will return to the area, performing at Dover Downs on Jan. 29 and at Atlantic City’s Borgota on March 18.
