Drive time: 3 hours.

The scoop: Greeting guests since 1728, this intimate 15-room fieldstone inn is the epitome of cozy. A young George Washington visited the tavern, and the building was a Confederate headquarters and hospital during the Civil War. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was a frequent guest during the fall foxhunting season, and Elizabeth Taylor often dined there.

Amenities: A full breakfast is included with overnight stay. For lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, the on-site tavern is a local favorite, and the Night Fox Pub is the perfect place to relax over a beer or cocktail.

Don’t miss: Middleburg’s Christmas celebration, which attracts over 10,000 visitors Dec. 4-6. A mile-long parade features about 100 horses and red-coated riders, plus dozens of hunting dogs. There’s also a tree-lighting ceremony and a holiday wine crawl. Take care of your gift list at the town’s numerous boutiques, antique shops and galleries.
