A walled Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik isn’t a tourist hot spot—yet. Flying low on the radar has allowed it to retain its Old World charm. June-September, American Airlines is launching non-stop service out of Philadelphia three times a week. Jamie Jones of West Chester’s WhirlAway Travel recommends visiting for three to four days and tying the trip in with visits to Split and Croatia’s capital city, Zagreb. Here are five must-dos.
1. Go oyster tasting. “Anyone who enjoys the Chesapeake oysters will probably be blown away by the oysters in Dubrovnik,” says Jones.

2. A UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the region is packed with history. Pay a visit to Gruda, one of the smaller villages, to see how silk has been made over the years.

3. It wouldn’t be a trip to Dubrovnik without walking atop the city’s fortress walls, which extend over a mile in length. “We recommend going really early,” says Jones. “There’s a high tower at the north end that has the best views of the city.”
4. Meander along Placa, a street flanked by churches and monasteries and ancient buildings.
5. Jones recommends taking a private yacht tour to the Elaphiti Islands. On this archipelago off the coast, you can peruse villages and visit beaches.
