the scoop: Completed in 1903, this 10-bedroom former grand manor house was turned into a B&B just last year. Its architecture uniquely combines Queen Anne Victorian with Italian Renaissance and Edwardian features. Italian marble enhances the exterior, with three types on the front porch alone. The inside is graciously appointed with gleaming woodwork. Three presidents—Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R. and William Howard Taft—stayed here when it was a private home. The Sequoia room is the one Teddy and his nephew enjoyed.
amenities: A full breakfast is included with overnight stay.
don’t miss: Visit the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center to learn about the life and works of the famed Underground Railroad “conductor.” In June, the ospreys hatch, young eagles take flight, and songbirds nest at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, home to the greatest number of breeding bald eagles on the East Coast, north of Florida.
