Just a few hours away by plane and near both the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains, this funky town is perfect for a long weekend getaway. There’s no better time than early November, when temperatures are moderate and fall foliage is still colorful. Here are five things to do:
1. Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Asheville serves as a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Encompassing over 816-square-miles, the park is home to sections of the Appalachian Trail, an observation tower, waterfalls and more.
2. Visit the Largest Privately Owned Home in the Country
One of the most prominent and storied American families, the Vanderbilts, erected their Biltmore estate here in the late 1800s.
Today, you can tour the 250-room French renaissance chateau and its grounds and gardens. Be sure to stop at the Antler Hill Village & Winery for local vintages.

3. Explore Stunning Horticultural Design
Get in touch with curated nature at the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum or the Botanical Gardens at Asheville.
4. Check Out the Vibrant Local Arts Scene
Be sure to wander the River Arts District, which is home to a number of galleries and studios, many housed in industrial-chic reclaimed spaces.
