2019 Guide to the New Jersey Shore

Here’s the latest on what’s happening in Avalon, Cape May and Stone Harbor.

Avalon

Avalon Brew Pub has a newly expanded outdoor seating area. Brewery highlights include the Chill Pils and the Belgian Beach Bum Witbier. For those in the mood for food, you can’t go wrong with the beer-and-cheddar soup, the lager-battered fish and chips, or the bouillabaisse in a pilsner-smoked tomato broth.

Capt’n Chucky’s Crab Cake Co. now has a seasonal location at 30th Street and Dune Drive. The extensive menu also includes shrimp and lobster. It’s a market set-up, so you’ll be picking up your food to go.

The booze-spiked milkshakes certainly aren’t kid’s stuff, but everybody in the family should find a favorite among the 24 Hershey’s Ice Cream flavors at the new Dips Ice Cream Parlor inside Bobby Dee’s Rock n’ Chair Restaurant.

Philadelphia chef Bujar Daku and his family (of La Fontana fame) have added three new Avalon spots to their growing hospitality portfolio. At Polpo, authentic Italian recipes get a contemporary twist. Choose from more than a dozen Neapolitan-style pies at Fratelli’s Wood-Fired Pizzeria. Inside Fratelli’s, Giolata’s serves a dozen varieties of homemade gelato.

Cape May

Aided by a Kickstarter campaign, Cynthia Mullock is completely renovating Cape May’s iconic 5 Perry Street. The historic 140-year-old Victorian building at 5 Perry Street is being transformed into a boutique beachfront property with 11 luxurious suites offering stunning ocean and sunset views. Reservations for its inaugural season begin in August.

The owners of three of Cape May’s premier B&Bs have opened the Ashley Rose while also refreshing their other properties inside and out, from the wallpaper and paint to the fixtures and furnishings. Located two blocks from the beach and near Cape May’s vibrant Washington Square Mall, the Ashley Rose offers seven bright and airy guestrooms in the main house and four charming private cottages with living rooms and small kitchenettes. The Harrison, Pharos at the Harrison and Casablanca are all located on Columbia Avenue.

End your busy day on a relaxing note in a comfy leather chair in the newly renovated Brown Room at Congress Hall, a sophisticated cocktail lounge inspired by the Prohibition era. Pair one of the specialty libations with a small-plate standout like sesame shrimp toast or charbroiled oysters.

Stone Harbor

The Reeds at Shelter Haven has transformed the former site of Henny’s restaurant on Third Avenue with a two-story spa and 21 additional guestrooms and junior suites. Most of the rooms in the Spa Building have private balconies, affording views of the town.

Salt Spa offers a full range of head-to-toe services and treatments, including a Turkish steam bath, full body scrubs on a heated slab, a rain-shower/light-pressure soap massage, a brine waterfall, and more.
