The Eagles’ Don Henley is flying solo these days. The tour supporting his latest album is coming to the Academy of Music on Nov. 12.
His first solo release in 15 years, Cass County has the feel of a country record, drawing on Henley’s East Texas heritage. Conjuring images of farms and oilrigs, the album actually samples everything from pop to Americana. It also has special musical guests like Merle Haggard—who adds a stamp of authenticity—and Stones legend Mick Jagger, who charms on vocals and harmonica.
Don’t expect a solo revival of Eagles songs at the show. The two-and-a-half-hour, 24-song set juxtaposes old and new in the same framework as the new album. Highlights include solo favorites like the snippy “Dirty Laundry” and the heart-wrenching “End of the Innocence.”
Henley will also performs about a dozen new songs, interspersed with surprise covers, including Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.”
Acclaimed singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin opens the evening, followed by a not-to-be-missed start to Henley’s set, with excerpts of classic songs complete with an old-time radio stage setting. Expect an early, exquisitely layered vocal performance of the venerable “7 Bridges Road”—a nod to the Eagles—and plenty of stories between songs.
