Where to Go Skiing Near the Main Line This Winter

Move past the post-holiday slump and get your much-needed winter fix.

With the weather cooling down and frost in the air, it’s time to break out the skis and hit these slopes just a short drive from the western suburbs.

Snow machines are whirring as ski resorts across Pennsylvania get ready for a brilliant season. From the Poconos to deeper in Appalachia, these resorts just a short drive from the Main Line are the places to be this winter. So dust off your old ski set or rent equipment from these mountain resorts and get ready to shred the slopes this winter.

Note: Drive times are approximate and start from Wayne.

Spring Mountain Adventures

Drive time: 30 minutes

Spring Mountain Adventures is a unique family experience. Along with skiing and snowboarding lessons, the venue also offers an ice skating rink complete with hockey and skating lessons.  

Bear Creek Mountain Resort

101 Doe Mountain Ln., Macungie
Drive time: One hour

Bear Creek Mountain Resort makes for a great mini-vacation as it’s equipped with a full-service spa and yoga to unwind after a day on the slopes. The resort also offers archery, axe throwing and other activities for the family, along with three dining locations.

Jack Frost & Big Boulder are two joint Poconos mountains welcoming skiers and snowboarders of all levels both day and night. The resort also offers several dining and shopping locations. Head to the Toboggan Bar for a beverage and boneless wings after a long day on the slopes, or check out the night skiing, which gets illuminated after sunset. 

Camelback Ski Resort

193 Resort Dr., Tannersville
Drive time: One hour, 30 minutes

Camelback Ski Resort offers snowboarding, skiing and snow tubing. Enjoy fitness lessons in the gym, then make the most of dining and shopping after a few runs on the slopes. As a bonus, the venue offers indoor family fun in the form of escape rooms, laser tag, rock climbing and an arcade. Although the outdoor water park is closed for the season, don’t forget to head to the Aquatopia indoor water park with the family for splash-tastic entertainment. 

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

401 Hollow Rd., East Stroudsburg
Drive time: One hour, 40 minutes

Planning for a December 8 re-opening, East Stroudsburg’s Shawnee Mountain offers 25 different options for skiers and snowboarders, 23 slopes and trail with two terrain parks ranging from black diamond to green circle. Starting as high as 1,350 feet, the longest slope extends for almost a full mile. For a more relaxed afternoon, check out the six snow-tubing chutes or kids’ Mini Monster Mountain.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Drive time: Two hours, 20 minutes

Liberty Mountain Resort offers a taste of history along with its renowned Ski School. Located just outside of Gettysburg, the resort invites guests to enjoy a hot tub and indoor pool after a day of skiing and snow tubing.

Whitetail Resort

Drive time: Two hours, 50 minutes

Visit Whitetail Resort for day or night skiing and choose between beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. Visit one of the five dining locations for cocktails, brick-oven pizzas and burgers with a view of the mountains.
