Looking for a good reason to check out booming downtown Phoenixville as you relive the golden days of horror cinema? Head to the Colonial Theatre’s annual Blobfest July 12-14.

Now in its 20th year, Blobfest highlights the 1958 cult classic The Blob and its roots in the region. Starring Steve McQueen, the movie was filmed in parts of Chester County, including the iconic scene at the Colonial where moviegoers flee from the mucky alien life form.

For the 20th anniversary, festivities kick off on July 12 with the reenactment of the moment in the film when terrified throngs pour out of the Colonial onto Bridge Street. The evening also includes the Shorty Awards, which spotlight local filmmakers.

On July 13, the Colonial hosts a street fair, with local vendors selling everything from vintage movie posters to sci-fi movie memorabilia. Also check out the annual costume contest and fire extinguisher parade (another tip of the hat to the film). Cap off the day with screenings of The Blob, The First Spaceship on Venus and The Green Slime. Festivities conclude on July 14 with additional screenings of The Blob and a few short films.

As much as Blobfest pays homage to the movie, it’s also about celebrating Phoenixville. “It’s about bringing the community together,” says Brendan Carr, marketing director for the Colonial Theatre. “There’s something for everyone.”
