What better place to enjoy a mushroom festival than in the mushroom capital of the world? The 32nd annual celebration will pay homage to the delicious and flavorful fungi which is nearly synonymous with the town. Stretching a mile long, the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival features culinary events and exhibits, as well as 250 vendors and a carnival for the kids.
This fun-filled weekend kicks off on Sept. 9 with a community parade between State and Willow streets, as well as the grand opening of the Old Fashioned Carnival. The following day, activities commence at 10 a.m. with the Street Fair, Growers’ Exhibit and Painted Mushroom Silent Auction, followed by the Amateur Mushroom Cook-Off. Admire colorful antique and classic cars on Broad and Cypress streets while listening to live music from Steely Jam, Hot Breakfast and Pepperwine Groove, plus a 10,000 Maniacs concert. Juggling, comedy shows, magic tricks and wildlife exhibits are sure to wow kids.

Most importantly, attendees can get their fill of some decadent fungi. Those up for a challenge can sign up for the National Fried Mushroom Eating Championship, hosted by Kennett Square’s Monty “Moe Train” Wiradilaga. The current world record stands at 11.5 pounds. If you prefer eating mushrooms in moderation, check out the culinary and Mushroom Sales Booths on Willow Street, where you can pick from the freshest varieties.
Proceeds for the event benefit the Mushroom Festival’s Grant Program, which has been giving grants to local nonprofits since 2000.
