Philly Goes Global
The City of Brotherly Love will once again show why it’s a world-class locale when it celebrates its vibrant international community at the Philadelphia Multicultural Affairs Commission’s fifth annual Global Fusion Festival on July 16. The theme for this year’s event—the city’s largest one-day festival—is CARNIVAL, which accurately conveys the high spirits of this summer showcase for Caribbean, Hispanic, African, African-American and Asian performers and culture. The day also features ethnic foods, folklore and family fun, including hip-hop and salsa dance lessons. Garden Party
Jazz music and mellow grooves are the typical sounds of summer. But if you’re looking for a little variety, Longwood Gardens has you covered. Miami based and Cuba born, the members of Tiempo Libre have been celebrated around the world for their infectious, uplifting timba, an Afro-Cuban variation of rumba. Following up a Grammy nomination for 2009’s Bach in Havana, the ensemble is currently promoting its latest release, My Secret Radio, which pays homage to their teenage years in Cuba while highlighting musical influences like Gloria Estefan, Chaka Khan and Earth, Wind & Fire.
