The debate over who makes the better pie—Mack’s or Sam’s—has been an ongoing battle in Wildwood that’s unlikely to end
anytime soon. For the Ocean City crowd, there is no debate: It’s Manco & Manco.
Ice Cream
If you can’t decide between chocolate, vanilla or any of the other fun flavors at Original Kohr Bros. Frozen Custard, then get a twist. Problem solved. Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream is made daily on-site. The super-premium recipe at this family-owned Stone Harbor institution comes in over 50 flavors. Don’t let the line scare you off—it’s worth the wait.
Caramel Corn
Johnson’s Caramel Popcorn. The bigger the tub, the better.
Fudge
Steel’s Fudge and Douglass Fudge have been around since 1919. Decadent flavors include chocolate walnut, cookies and cream, chocolate turtle caramel, and more. Relative newbie The Original Fudge Kitchen has been hand-whipping the stuff for over 40 years.
SaltWater Taffy
Both James’ Candy and Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy were founded in the 1880s and were fierce rivals until they were bought in the 1990s by the Glaser family. Today, each brand still has its own recipes, stores and loyal fan followings. Shriver’s is the oldest business on the boardwalk in Ocean City. Don’t miss the chocolate-covered saltwater taffy.
Elephant Ears
There’s no sweeter way to start a summer day in Long Beach Island than this flaky, melt-in-your-mouth pastry with a crunchy sugar top from Crust & Crumb Bakery in Beach Haven. (609) 492-4966.
Sticky Buns
We dare you not to lick your fingers. In Margate and Brigantine, it’s Aversa’s Italian Bakery. South of AC, folks swear by Mallon’s.
Hoagies, Cheesesteaks and Fries
White House Subs. Don’t come in here asking for a hoagie. Atlantic City’s White House has been synonymous with subs at the Shore since 1946.
Voltaco’s. Insanely good hoagies and cheese-steaks—and perhaps the best chicken cheesteak anywhere. A no-brainer for beach lunches in Ocean City. (609) 399-0743.
Curley’s Fries. Sprinkle with a little vinegar, and pair with an icy lemonade shake-up. Curley’s has been making its original fresh-cut fries in Wildwood since 1974.
Hot Dogs
Hot Dog Tommy’s. A guy who wears a hot dog on his head isn’t likely to be shy, so don’t be surprised if Tom Snyder says something to make you smile at his takeout wiener window in Cape May.
