Lifelong Main Line resident Charles E. Dagit Jr. may have retired from the renowned Dagit-Saylor Architects, but he remains fascinated by the colorful stories buildings tell us about history and the innovative architects who brought them to life. The Gladwyne resident’s ongoing enthusiasm led him to write The Groundbreakers: Architects in American History—Their Places and Times. The 2015 book recently spawned the eight-part Groundbreakers TV series that’s currently airing on MLTV-Main Line Network.
Through one-hour interviews and historical photos, Dagit celebrates the architects who were the style pioneers of their time. Among the trailblazers he profiles: Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Furness and Robert Venturi. Dagit is interviewed by his wife, Alice, who also produces the show. “I wrote the book because I realized that few people know much about American architecture, its richness and its influence on our lives,” says Dagit. “Architecture is all around us, but we’re little aware of it. We take it for granted.”
Charles Dagit is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and has earned over 60 local, regional and national design awards. He’s also the author of Louis I Kahn, Architect—Remembering the Man and Those Who Surrounded Him.
