5 Can’t-Miss Summer Events Worth the Drive from the Main Line

From Firefly Music Festival to the Mercer Museum, these spots don’t disappoint.

The Boardwalk at Herseypark 
Hersey, Pa. Drive time: 1 hour, 30 minutes.

The Boardwalk at Hersheypark welcomes two new rides this summer: Breakers Edge, a family-friendly hydro-magnetic water coaster with flying-saucer turns; and Whitecap Racer, the longest mat-racing slide in the world.

Firefly Music Festival
Dover, Del. Drive time: 1 hour, 30 minutes.

Dover International Speedway’s Woodlands will be in full-blown festival mode for Firefly June 14-17. Music fans from all over country will be camping out and generally roughing it to see headliners Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Arctic Monkeys and the Killers, along with a host of other acts. Drive time: 1 hour, 30 minutes.

Peddler’s Village Red, White and Blue BBQ Bash
New Hope, Pa. Drive time: 50 minutes.

Get a jump on July 4 at Peddler’s Village on June 30 for the Red, White and Blue BBQ Bash. This classic family-style barbecue event features great food, live music, kids’ activities shopping and more.

Maple Grove Raceway Lantern Fest
Mohnton, Pa. Drive time: 50 minutes.

Can’t make it to Thailand for the world-renowned Yee Peng Festival? Maple Grove Raceway is hosting its own version on June 9, when thousands of attendees will release lanterns into the sky as part of the family-friendly Lantern Fest.

Mercer Museum
Doylestown, Pa. Drive time: 45 minutes. 

With all there is to see and do in Philadelphia, it’s easy to overlook Mercer Museum. Take a day to discover this wholly unique Bucks County gem, which houses Henry Mercer’s vast collection of outmoded technology—some 30,000 items ranging from hand tools to horse-drawn carriages to a whale boat. There’s also the summer exhibit, Racing: A Need for Speed. And be sure to tour Mercer’s regal early-19th-century home, Fonthill Castle.
