A Hearth at Drexel Resident Savors Her Daughter’s Virtual Wedding

A Hearth Resident Savors Her Daughter’s Virtual Wedding

Living in the Philadelphia region for many years, Nancy Partridge raised her children in Drexel Hill alongside her husband. “When my husband passed in 2001, I thought I’d sell my house and move some place. I’ve had MS for years, so I knew I needed care,” she says. “That didn’t happen—at least not right away. I spent about five more years in my house living alone.”

As time passed, Nancy knew it was time for a change. She remembered The Hearth, and after seeing the community and its many amenities, she stayed there on a weeklong respite. “I really wanted to give it a try and see how I liked the place,” she says.

Nancy moved in permanently five years ago. “The activities calendar here is jam-packed,” she says. “It’s really outstanding.”

Nancy relishes her active lifestyle at The Hearth, whether she’s enjoying a fun outing, reading Romeo and Juliet with the Shakespeare Club, or taking part in a lecture led by a historian. “The staff here are all so responsive,” she says. “If I ever have ideas about new activities or places to go, they’ll follow up right away—and if it’s a good idea, they’ll put it on the schedule.”

Nancy is also a big fan of The Hearth’s restaurant-quality cuisine. “The food here is really good,” she says.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, The Hearth continues to go above and beyond to find creative ways to connect with residents while keeping them safe and healthy. “Even through this pandemic, the staff have kept up with our activities in new ways, which can obviously present a lot of challenges,” she says. “They’ve just been terrific.”

One such challenge was the wedding of Nancy’s daughter, Alicia. Nancy knew she wouldn’t be able to attend the nuptials in person. “I said, ‘If you two want to get married, just go ahead and do it,’” she laughs. “Her fiancé asked me for my blessing, and I said, ‘Of course you have my blessing to get married.’”

After the couple opted to have the wedding on Zoom so family and friends could participate virtually, the organist from the church gave Alicia an list of songs. “My daughter asked me to help her choose a song for the ceremony,” Nancy recalls. “I wasn’t familiar with many of them.”

Nancy wore one of her nicest outfits, even pouring a glass of wine to celebrate. Her grandsons walked her daughter down the aisle, with her granddaughter as maid of honor. Her step grandson was his father’s best man. “As a parent, you really just want your children to be happy,” says Nancy.

At The Hearth, Nancy is looking forward to a continued connection with family and friends.
