Expanding the Stolen Sun brand is a grassroots passion for owner Jonathan Zangwill, who’s always out there selling and delivering kegs and coffee beans to local spots like Four Dogs Tavern and Rolling Stars. Meanwhile, the popularity of his Exton brewery has been on a steady uphill trajectory over the past two years, punctuated by a recent expansion that has tripled its size. Now that he’s taken over the former gym space next door, Zangwill has a new access point for the original taproom and brewery. He’s added two barrels to the existing 10, reworked his canning operations, and expanded coffee-roasting operation.
The cavernous beer hall absorbs natural light from ample windows, its strings of draped Edison lights reflecting on the varnished cement floors. From taps, bartenders pour ales, kolsches, hazy IPAs and sours, with a focus on crowd favorites like the Baby Juices and New Exton IPAs and Jumpy Jon’s Java Stout (with Stolen Sun coffee) and Quack of Dawn (a Duck Donuts collaboration).
Keeping things local, Zangwill’s staff offers something for everyone with Penns Woods wines and cocktails made with spirits from Brandywine Branch and Boardroom distilleries. The small kitchen whips up exceptional cheesesteaks, burgers, wraps and salads, and the addition of a hickory smoker brings a mouth-watering hand-rubbed pulled pork sandwich to the mix.
Out back, trees provide nice shade for the beer garden, which borders a stream and has been expanded with more seating. Live music at Stolen Sun is a big weekend draw, and they plan to move it out to the beer garden this summer for perfect warm-weather vibes.
