• In case you missed this one, City Tavern owner Walter Staib was named culinary ambassador to Philadelphia by Gov. Ed Rendell back in July. Among other accolades, Staib was recognized for the tavern’s ambitious and accurate historical restoration, transporting visitors and city residents back in time.

• Look for Starting with Ingredients later this month, the 1,000-plus page gastronomique masterpiece by Philadelphia culinary legend Aliza Green (DiLullo, Apropos, White Dog Café). A hundred information-packed chapters offer home cooks invaluable tips and instructions on selection, storage and preparation of an A-Z list of ingredients, along with brief descriptions and history.

• Contrary to rumors, Kildare’s in West Chester is not closing—this according to the restaurant’s PR machine. But owner Dave Magrogan is opening a second restaurant in West Chester, Doc Magrogan’s, which may be up and running as you read this. Doc’s is an authentic oyster house in the classic Boston/Baltimore style. Apparently Magrogan is also looking at locations in Manayunk for a similar concept, so stay tuned.
