The Home Retreat: Designing Spaces for Main Line Parents in a Bryn Mawr Home

So many parents struggle to make their homes kid-friendly without sacrificing sophistication. Christina Henck of Henck Design has some insights to help you make your home a haven for everyone in the family.

“We like to create dressy spaces that appeal to the eye and are comfortable to live in,” says Henck.

Transformation Through Color

Comfortable sophistication starts with color choices. Whether you prefer glamourous metallic finishes, elegant jewel tones, or chic and minimal black-and-white, you can lay the groundwork for your own luxurious style with your choice of colors, textures, and metals.

“In soft seating areas, like living and family rooms, rugs really warm up the space, and can incorporate many colors,” says Henck, “and furnishings upholstered with performance fabrics are perfect for growing families.”

In this Bryn Mawr home, the custom ottoman in the family room works for everyone. The toddlers in the family are safe from sharp corners, and the adults can still use the ottoman as a coffee table.

Repeating elements like layered patterns, neutral textures, and analogous color stories from room to room creates a cohesive palette for a home’s design.

Using Layout to Create Zones

While most rooms in a family home need to be designed with people of all ages in mind, you can carve out an adults-only retreat for yourself, and the master suite is the perfect place to start.

“Creating a master bedroom retreat allows you to step away into the adult zone, even if it is just for the night,” says the designer. A small sitting area at the foot of the bed can allow your bedroom to have more versatility for the adults in your family.

These Bryn Mawr parents incorporated full dressers in the place of the typical nightstands to accompany their oversized four-poster bed. Henck Design helped them incorporate extra soft seating, luxurious large-scale art, and plush rugs to take this master bedroom to the next level. The hotel-like feel creates an opulent oasis for the homeowners in their family home.

Elevate Kids’ Art Away From the Fridge

Art is such an important part of a home, and combining family portraits, candid photos, and children’s art into a gallery wall is a tasteful way to showcase the kids’ budding talent.

“Want to know a Henck Design secret?  You can have your child’s drawings scanned and blown up at your local printing company into large-format art with amazing visual impact,” says Henck.  “You can archive the original work for later keepsakes or scrapbooks, but the kids can see themselves proudly on display every single day.” With these inside tips and looks from award-winning Henck Design, you’ll be able to design your dream home for your entire family.
