One hundred years ago, going out for a cocktail in this country was illegal. Producing, importing, transporting and serving alcoholic beverages was prohibited under a national constitutional law. As a result, law enforcement officers shut down bars and nightclubs across the country. But that didn’t stop people from seeking out alcohol, nor did it stop their ability to purchase and consume alcohol outside of the home. On the contrary, hidden bars and nightclubs that served alcohol to patrons cropped up in cities across the country and became very popular venues during the prohibition years. Even though raids by police officers and agents of the Bureau of Prohibition were a regular occurrence, these illegal bars continued to flourish.
Now these establishments—known as “speakeasies” due to the need to whisper when attempting to gain admission to the illegal bar—are a thing of the past, thanks to the ratification of the Twenty-First Amendment which ended prohibition in December of 1933. But Wayne’s 118 North restaurant is bringing the speakeasy back, celebrating that time in United States history with a fun-filled costume party to remember.
“Speakeasy Night” is a 1920s-themed speakeasy cocktail party held from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Guests aged 21 and over are invited to order special drinks from a full open bar serving creative twists on classic 1920s style cocktails, including “Cat’s Pajamas” or a “Bees Knees,” in addition to traditional bar fare. Unlimited themed hors d’oeuvres such as “Oysters Rockefeller” will make their rounds all night long, accompanied by various food stations featuring speakeasy-themed offerings.
Guests are invited to try their hand at blackjack and poker tables for some non-monetary fun, with prizes awarded to participants. Magicians will entertain the crowd while the air is filled with music reminiscent of the days of speakeasies. Live music from Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society, the Philadelphia area’s very own “Hot Jazz” band, will take the stage with jazz, pop and blues tunes that were popular from the 1920s to the mid-1930s.
No whispering at the door is required to access Speakeasy Night, but guests are encouraged to purchase tickets online before the event by visiting 118 North’s events calendar. 118 North is a restaurant, bar and live music club located in Wayne, PA. 118 North features innovative Americana cuisine, serving high-quality cocktails and unique brews in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
