How thrilling to read about the great work of Dr. Winifred Constable in the December issue (“Out of Africa”). Since Constable mentioned Radnor Middle School, I thought she and your readers might be interested to know that we have a group of socially concerned students who are also involved with a village in Uganda. They’ve been corresponding with students at Bupala Primary School for the past five years. They raised funds for the construction of a new latrine in 2012, and since February 2013, we’ve been providing lunch for the 600 pupils who attend the school.
We commend the work of Constable, and we hope that our efforts make a lasting impact on the health and education of our pen pals. Understanding their lives has certainly developed an increased sense of appreciation for all that we have. —Jodi Sabra, Radnor Middle School
Shame on “preservationist” Jane Dorchester and the article “Immediate Past” (January 2014). It sounds more like an opportunity for Dorchester to state her platform and bash respected developer Tony Stancato.
As a born-and-raised borough resident, I also want to retain the charm of
West Chester. However, to stay alive, West Chester must also grow with the times. Fine examples of successful growth are Iron Hill Brewery (a Stancato success) and the former theater that’s now the Hotel Warner (Brian McFadden).
Dorchester, Bill Scott and Barbara Lynch need a reality check; they can’t continue to be NIMBY (not in my backyard) preservationists. Certainly, Stancato deserves an apology. He’s helped West Chester grow with grace while maintaining its charm. —Sarah Taylor Finnaren, West Chester
