A revamped bedroom and bath in Villanova helps reconnect this Main Line couple after their children left home.
After the kids left home, a couple in Villanova turned their thoughts to creating the perfect empty nest, a serene bed-and-bath suite where they could really reconnect with each other. They envisioned a timeless and sophisticated retreat with abundant natural light, high-end finishes and a relaxing vibe.
The couple turned to Glenna Stone, who was already busy transforming the their kitchen, laundry room and guest baths. “In the bedroom, we created a design focusing on fabrics, wood and brass, balanced by a neutral palette and pops of blue,” says Stone.
Broadloom carpet grounds the dreamy feeling, providing visual softness and comfort for bare feet. “Patterns and textures add warmth and personality,” Stone says. “It feels layered, cozy and restful.”
A master-bath renovation opened a previously divided room into one large, spa-inspired space with sumptuous details. A half wall with a column between the tub and sink area allows separation without closing off the bathroom, creating an airier feel.
A Calacatta marble storage niche in the tub is echoed by a coordinating niche in the shower. The addition of a skylight ushers in natural light while providing symmetry with an existing skylight over the custom vanity and medicine cabinets. A linen closet would’ve eaten into the newly opened footprint, so Stone commissioned a custom standalone cabinet, painted in a soft gray that picks up the marble veining.
In the end, simplicity is the key to this peaceful retreat. Banish clutter and make way for tranquility. “Make sure clothes, shoes and accessories have a home that’s out of sight, and only leave things on your dresser or nightstand that have a purpose—like the novel you’re currently reading or a favorite picture frame you bought on vacation,” Stone says.
