When I first moved from Chicago to Philadelphia almost 30 years ago, I knew about Robert Hazard. That was about it for the local Philly music scene. Boy oh boy, was I in for a treat! The music scene in this area during the ’80s was electric. From Dobbs and The Ripley on South Street to the Cabarets (23 East, Chestnut, West Chester) to the Buggy Tavern to The Empire Rock Club to the East Side Club. You get the idea—there was always a choice on a weekend. Or even during the week.
Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers bounced into that vibrant Philadelphia scene as the newer kids on the block. With his boyish good looks and a slightly suggestive grin, Tommy became an instant heartthrob. The ladies loved him and the guys wanted to be him with his high-energy, bar-leaping, guitar-slinging stage persona. “I’m Not Your Man” was a No. 1 song and as one of the album titles suggested, the Rumblers were “walkin’ on water.”
Through the years, Tommy has continued with his musical career as well as establishing himself as a radio personality. And for something to be truly thankful for this Thanksgiving season, Tommy will reunite his Rumblers for a show at the Electric Factory on Nov. 23. Chris Day, Jim Hannum, Rob Miller and Paul Slivka will reprise their roles on stage with Tommy, and the show promises to be one rollicking good time, not to mention a great way to dance off the pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes! Plus, Tommy promises to pull out at least one unrecorded gem that the band hasn’t played in at least forever—one for the failthful fans!
