With median home prices around the Main Line ranging from $220,000 to $650,000, it’s no secret that Philadelphia’s western suburbs are among the most expensive places to live in the country.
Bloomberg recently released a comprehensive breakdown of the wealthiest communities in the United States, ranking zip codes according to their residents’ average adjusted gross incomes (AGI), or total taxable income minus specific deductions. Unsurprisingly, the Main Line area was represented on the list, with Gladwyne ranking at number six.
According to Bloomberg, the 19035 zip code’s AGI is $957,200. While impressive, that’s still more than $1.5 million less than the wealthiest zip code in America, which belongs to Fisher Island (33109) in Miami Beach, Fla. Rounding out the top five are Atherton, Calif. (94027) with an AGI of $1,496,500; Palm Beach, Fla. (33480), $1,254,500; Palo Alto, Calif. (94301), $1,175,400; and Harrison, N.Y. (10577), $976,200.

Bloomberg also reported that Gladwyne’s AGI has increased by 32.7 percent over the last five years. The town’s average salary, which is $389,100, has also been on the rise, increasing by 40.8 percent over the same time period.
The rankings were based on IRS data from the 2015 tax filing season, as well as recent figures from Zillow.com and census data. Only zip codes that had more than 200 tax returns and 500 residential households were considered. More than 22,000 zip codes qualified.
