Netroots
Matthew R. Kerbel
(Paradigm Publishers, 224 pages)

Away from the lecterns, campaign appearances and televised debates, there’s another political arena quickly gaining momentum: the blogosphere. A Villanova University political science professor and Wayne resident, Kerbel explores the relationships forged between candidates and voters via political blogs. Neither wholly leftist nor conservative, the “netroots” movement is fast becoming remarkably effective—making this book a must-read for the civic-minded.

Philly Craft Beer Festival 2011
A serious education for novice suds-seekers and a connoisseur’s dream come true, the Philly Craft Beer Festival floods Center City’s Cruise Terminal on March 5. With more than 50 breweries serving upwards of 100 beers, it’s no wonder the event has been dubbed one of the top 10 beer festivals in America by Forbes Traveler. This year’s seminar subjects include winter beers, building your own brewery and a national IPA taste-off. Just don’t forget your designated driver—or the perks of being one: The $60 admission fee plummets to $10 for those willing to take one for the team. Visit phillycraftbeerfest.com.

The Martinos: A Legacy of Art
James McClelland
(Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, 181 pages, 165 illustrations)
Philadelphia’s Martino family produced more artists than the Peales, Wyeths and Calders. Yet their story largely languished in obscurity—until now. Antonio, Giovanni, Frank, Alberto, Ernesto, William and Edmund Martino all excelled in commercial art for clients like Scott Paper, General Electric and DuPont. Away from work, they focused on fine art. Edmund, the youngest, died last in 2000 in Newtown Square. Through colorful anecdotes and oral histories from the next generation of Martinos, McClelland, executive director emeritus of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, paints a masterful portrait.
