It’s considered one of the most versatile options for the home. It sits there unassumingly, while other things fight for prominence in a room. The mystery material is acrylic, and Lucite is its brand name.
Though it’s hardly something new, Lucite is having a major moment right now. “Rooms in our homes are filled with wood, upholstery and metal. Lucite brings another dimension to a room,” says Krissa Wichser, owner of The Blue Octagon in Malvern.
Wichser has an array of acrylic furniture and accessories in her current inventory. She loves that Lucite works in spaces where you don’t want to block a view—it’s literally a clear choice. One of her most popular pieces is Jonathan Adler’s Jacques Étagère, a perfect translucent vehicle for displaying books and more. Adler’s wildly popular bar cart might soon make its way to her boutique. “Acrylic is a classic element that’s been around for a long time,” she says. “You’re seeing more of it now, but it’s not something that will be going out of style anytime soon.”
Ballard Designs—which just opened its first Pennsylvania store last month in the King of Prussia Mall—has a number of Lucite pieces in its winter collection, including file boxes and side tables. “Lucite easily complements what’s already existing in the room,” says Jean Jones, Ballard’s vice president of marketing. “It’s not competing withanything else that’s in the space.”
Lucite tables offer a clean, crisp canvas for accessories. Jones loves how they reflect natural light. “It allows a room to have an open, airy feel,” she says.
Acrylic also blends well with an array of styles. “It matches everything,” says Jones.
