Staff Picks: Paul Weller at Union Transfer

PLUS: Online vintage treasure trove Three Potato Four and Financial Literacy Center’s Bear Country Credit Union.

Paul Weller

July 31 at Union Transfer

One of British punk and new wave’s most esteemed elder statesmen makes a rare Philly appearance this month. As the leader of highly influential mod-rock trio the Jam and R&B-flavored, early-MTV favorite the Style Council, Weller paved the way for many more successful acts with names you’ve probably heard of before—Oasis among them. Now in his 50s, he has continued to stay relevant with a recent spate of edgy, excellent music, including last year’s Sonik Kicks. Given Weller’s love-hate relationship with our country, who knows when the Modfather will come around again? Don’t miss your chance to see a genuine icon in a club setting. Visit —Hobart Rowland

Three Potato Four

Scouring vintage shops and estate sales can be fun—if you have the time. For a speedier outcome, check out Janet Morales and Stu Eli’s Three Potato Four, an online treasure trove of items bursting with throwback charm—like these rope-strung wooden anchors and other nautical accents. A Media warehouse will soon be home to the duo’s proprietary creations, which are set to go live next month. Visit—Emily Riley

Financial Literacy Center’s Bear Country Credit Union

Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, Broomall

Forget Dr. Seuss. As a kid, I couldn’t get enough of the Berenstain Bears. So, my inner child was thrilled with this new interactive Financial Literacy Center exhibit. Designed by Philadelphia’s Metcalfe Architecture & Design, the iconic bear family’s tree house has engaging features like “Piggy Bank Pinball,” where grade-schoolers can “help the cubs decide how to use their money wisely.” It’s never too early to start teaching kids about fiscal management (and I know a few adults who could benefit, as well). Visit —Tara Behan
