THE SCOOP: Built in 1906, this charming Queen Anne Victorian sits on the tip of Southern Maryland’s Solomons Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Five guestrooms are decorated with furnishings and artwork from its early days as a private home. In 1997, a two-room carriage house was added. A bountiful three-course breakfast on the enclosed porch is included with your stay. So are homemade cookies, coffee cakes and other treats.

MYTHICAL MARVELS: The annual week-long Solomons Dragon Boat Festival kicks off Aug. 13 on the Patuxent River. Throughout the month, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center hosts its Enchanted Summer event. Families can search for over 100 fairy houses, find the hidden dragon’s nest, and surround themselves with real winged wonders in the Butterfly Garden.
