It took a freelance assignment with a wine magazine for Serena Zelezny to learn the difference between pinot grigio and pinot noir. “I didn’t know anything about wine,” she says. “I crammed the night before the interview, trying to learn everything I could about the wine industry.”
After that one assignment, Zelezny was hooked. “I was fascinated,” she says.
Living in California at the time, Zelezny started working at a winery on weekends, which led to years of moonlighting at various wine-related jobs and taking major certification exams to increase her knowledge. She’s currently a certified specialist of wine through the Society of Wine Educators and is pursuing her Master of Wine certification.
Two years ago, Zelezny relocated to the Main Line and decided to create a company called What Am I Drinking?! This past May, she opened a wine education studio in Bryn Mawr under the same name. “I wanted to create a place where people could drink and learn about wine,” she says. “My passion is in being able to teach people and share my passion for wine in a nonstuffy way. I want to make learning about wine fun.”
