Self-Reflection Can Help with Major Transitions

In stressful circumstances, having stability is important.

Change is often exciting. But it’s also stressful, disruptive and emotional. While major transitions like retirement, marriage and career shifts are planned, other events can happen without notice. It’s important to be self-reflective during these times. Here are four strategies to help embrace change and make the most of life transitions:

  1. It’s normal to have an uncertain sense of security and identity. Any time our surroundings or daily rhythm is disrupted, we feel disoriented. Emotional equilibrium will return after we’ve settled into the new role. Be patient as you build a new identity.
  2. Remember why you decided to make a change. It’s normal to have mixed emotions when going through a major transition, whether happy or sad. Doubting your decision is common. Tell yourself the reasons you needed a change to gain understanding and feel empowered. It’s normal to feel some degree of uncertainty, fear, doubt and discomfort.
  3. Focus on your strengths. Recall what helped you get through difficult times in the past. Focusing on your strengths while going through a transition boosts self-esteem and confidence.  
  4. Stay connected to trusted friends and family. Sharing your fears, concerns and doubts with people you feel close to and trust can be a tremendous source of strength and comfort.
