Salon d’Artiste Celebrates 30 Years on the Main Line

Owner Lorraine Friedberg is having a month-long blowout to commemorate this milestone.

After several moves and a few bumps in the road, Wayne’s Salon d’Artiste is marking its 30th anniversary with a month-long celebration. Owner Lorraine Friedberg opened the doors to her salon exactly 30 years ago, on Oct. 15, 1985. Over the years, she’s expanded the salon considerably, becoming one of the area’s first day spas as well.

Coming from a background as a hairstylist and salon managergarnering loyalty among those that worked under her— Friedberg was able to create an atmosphere with her company that she likens to family. “I have wonderful people. I try to run the place more like a family. When you walk in, you can feel that,” she says.

Her success wasn’t without its trouble, however. “It was very difficult for a single woman to open her own business. It was a major struggle to get loans. I put everything on the line. I almost failed a few times,” she admits. But with the help of her friends, including two who are her manager and assistant manager, she’s been able to find success, and stay behind the chair, where she says she prefers to be. “I’m very lucky.”

Friedberg introduced her spa, now a major feature of her business, 25 years ago. “I wanted to have the clients experience a more tranquil surrounding,” she says. Likening the idea of European spas and destination spas in the U.S., she aimed to create a similar vibe.

Today, Friedberg is still behind the chair, cutting hair among her large staff in the “buzzy, New York-like” atmosphere of the salon. Making people happier “no matter what kind of service” is her goal, she says, loving when people leave with a smile.

In celebration of this milestone, Friedberg is having events throughout the month, including a small gathering at the salon on Oct. 15. There will be small hors d’oeuvres and bubbly, along with giveaways and tours, with 10 percent of the day’s sales going to The National Children’s Cancer Society’s Beyond the Cure scholarship fund, which is open to the public.

Patrons can also celebrate by dropping into the salon anytime this month for a tour and receive a free bottle of nail color from OPI or Essie’s fall collection. New clients will receive 30 percent off any one service, up to $100, while returning clients can receive 30 percent off a service they haven’t tried before, up to $100.

From Oct. 13-17, clients can receive a free power dose protein treatment to add strength and shine to hair. Between Oct. 20-24, the salon will offer free brow tinting. To end the month, from Oct. 27-31, get a free revitalizing eye treatment when you get a facial.
