Remembering Local Philanthropist Dorrance “Dodo” Hill Hamilton

The Campbell Soup heiress was a renowned gardener and benefactor of the arts.

The Main Line experienced a tremendous loss with the passing of iconic philanthropist Dorrance “Dodo” Hill Hamilton this past April. The Campbell Soup Company heiress made many substantial contributions over the years to various arts, education, healthcare and horticulture institutions in the area. She competed at the Philadelphia Flower Show, amassing countless blue ribbons and awards, and often opened up the gardens on her 10-acre Wayne estate to others to help raise funds for charity.

Hamilton’s legacy includes the restoration of the Blue Garden in Newport, R.I. Just a few days before Hamilton’s death, Blue Garden director Sarah Vance was in the area giving a lecture on just that subject. You can find the full story in Vance’s new book, The Blue Garden: Recapturing an Iconic Newport Landscape. It’s available for sale at Valley Forge Flowers.
