Beer lovers, take note: West Chester’s Boxcar Brewing Company is quietly making a name for itself with approachable, tasty suds and a community-focused mentality. Unlike many craft brewers, Boxcar focuses on “session” beers—lower-alcohol, mildly flavored brews with a wider appeal.
The perfect companion for the dog days of summer, Boxcar’s Original Ale is a smooth, refreshing English mild that balances a subtle, biscuity sweetness, hints of citrus and a slightly hoppy finish. Boxcar Brown Ale offers a fuller flavor, starting with caramel and clove notes, and finishing with a modest, coffee-tinged bitterness. And for the “bigger” beer lover, Boxcar also just debuted an IPA.
A company founded and run by cousins Jason Kohser and Jamie Robinson, Boxcar’s family approach extends to the local community. Several times a month, they recruit an army of thirsty volunteers to help bottle the latest batch of fresh beer. Though it’s strictly an unpaid gig, bottlers young and old come from all over the area to learn about the brewing process, swap home-brew secrets, and discuss all things beer.
