Q&A: Boyds Philadelphia’s Kent Gushner

The owner of the esteemed men’s retailer shares his fall fashion tips.

Favorite designers: My top picks are the Italian family-run brands with a long-standing history—Trussini, Canali, Salvatore Ferragamo, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brioni, Kiton and Isaia.

Favorite fall-fashion trends: Menswear has never been as exciting as it is today. On the tailored side, it’s about mixing textures and patterns deep colors, sport coats with soft shoulders, and plaids. I own some windowpane suits, which is a subtle way to bring in the plaid trend.

Style icon: I’ve always admired Frank Sinatra. He had a swagger and confidence that was never flashy or cocky. He believed in wearing perfectly tailored clothes and wasn’t afraid to live by his own set of rules when it came to fashion.

Personal style: When in doubt, wear a suit or a jacket. My wife, Mindy, jokes that if I had my way, I’d go to sleep in a suit instead of my pajamas.

Favorite thing in his closet: I’m pretty fond of my Santoni brown lace-ups. You wouldn’t think brown would go with everything, but it does.

Things that gets the most wear: My Kleinberg and Ferragamo belts are on regular rotation. Outside of that, I’m always wearing my Panerai Luminor watch.
