Katie Groves has been doing a lot of packing lately. Within the past year, she’s moved both her home and Studio 882, the high-end furniture store she owns with her husband, Chad. The latter has gone from an intimate space in Chadds Ford to a Glen Mills showroom that’s four times as big.
Personal style: Classical roots, layered with touches of warmth and unexpected details.
Favorite room in her home: I’m itching to finish the entryway/foyer, since it sets the tone for the rest of the house. And I can’t wait to design the guest bedroom. It’s an opportunity to get really creative.
Prized possessions: The pieces we’ve picked up on our travels. I especially love the art we bought while living in Australia.
Design advice: For a collected-over-time, pulled-together look, start with a thematic foundation—whether it’s a style, a period or a color. Then layer on different textures, experiment with patterns, and add unexpected lighting and accents.
Color she couldn’t design without: Every room needs a touch of something white for balance and contrast.
Favorite trend of the moment: I love the attention that’s being paid to hardware right now. We’re seeing some gorgeous details on cabinets, dressers, nightstands, etc.
Favorite rooms to design: Rooms that are lived in daily, whether it’s a family room, breakfast room or master bedroom. I love the challenge of creating spaces that are practical and durable, but also alluring. You should be delighted by your home every day.
Her definition of good taste: Attention to quality and detail. It’s all about balance—and that requires good editing.
Three words that sum up her design: Well-curated, harmonious, welcoming.
