Q&A: Szoradi Design’s Cynthia Szoradi

The Wayne-based interior designer dishes on her personal style.

Personal decorating style: I’ll tastefully use color, fabric, pattern, texture, artwork and a hint of animal print anywhere I can.

Favorite room in her house: Our large, open kitchen/family room. We call it the great room because it’s perfect for everything from family game night to late-night dance parties.

Most prized possessions: The Calder my husband and I won at an auction, artwork passed down from older generations, and the canvasses my children made when they were young.

Designer who inspires her: Billy Baldwin. His mastery of scale and comfort, his bold use of color, and his timelessness are impressive.

Color she couldn’t design without: Any shade of blue, from silvery gray to navy lacquer.

Favorite design advice: Don’t forget the ceiling or the back of built-ins. I do a lot of wallpaper or lacquer to finish off a room.

Design element she loves to incorporate: Custom lamp shades—they really make a room feel tailored. I also use a lot of trim on pillows, furniture and curtains.

Favorite design trend of the moment: Not sacrificing form over function. Performance fabrics allow you to use every room in your house, regardless of children, pets or a raucous dinner party.

The best part of her job: Knowing my clients will be making lifelong memories in the spaces I design.
